You bring pardon and peace to the sinner.  Christ, have mercy

Christ have mercy

You lead us to everlasting life.  Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen

The Collect

Almighty God and Father, It is our certain faith that your Son, who died on the cross, was raised from the dead, the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep.

Grant that through this mystery, your servant and priest Philip who has gone to his rest in Christ, may share in the joy of his resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Amen.

THE FIRST READING:   (Please be seated)

A reading from S. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Read by Rev Ali Dorey

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor, and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

1. Love divine, all loves excelling,

joy of heaven, to earth come down,

fix in us thy humble dwelling,

all thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

pure unbounded love thou art;

visit us with thy salvation,

enter every trembling heart.

2. Come, almighty to deliver,

let us all thy life receive;

suddenly return, and never,

never more thy temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

serve thee as thy hosts above;

pray, and praise thee without ceasing,

glory in thy perfect love.

3. Finish then thy new creation,

pure and sinless let us be;

let us see thy great salvation

perfectly restored in thee.

Changed from glory into glory,

till in heaven we take our place,

till we cast our crowns before thee,

lost in wonder, love, and praise.

THE GOSPEL:

The Lord be with you.

And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to St. Mark:     Mark 6:

Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.’ But he answered them, ‘You give them something to eat.’ They said to him, ‘Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii* worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?’ And he said to them, ‘How many loaves have you? Go and see.’ When they had found out, they said, ‘Five, and two fish.’ Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

During Holy Communion the following hymn will be sung.

1 I danced in the morning when the world was begun,

And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,

And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,

At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Dance, then wherever you may be,

I am the Lord of the dance said he.

And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be

And I’ll lead you all in the dance said he.

2 I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,

But they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me.

I danced for the fishermen for James and John;

They came with me

And the dance went on.

3 I danced on the Sabbath

And I cured the lame,

The holy people said it was a shame.

They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,

And left me there on the cross to die.

4 I danced on the Friday when the sky turned black.

It’s hard to dance with a devil on your back.

They buried my body and I thought I’d gone

But I am the dance and I still go on.

5 They cut me down and I leapt up high.

I am the life that will never, never die

I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me.

I am the Lord of the Dance said he.

THE PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (Please stand)

The Celebrant sings the prayer and we reply

Amen.

THE FINAL COMMENDATION

(Coming to stand close to the catafalque, the Priest gives this exhortation to the people)

Our brother and priest Philip has fallen asleep In the peace of Christ,

We commit him, with faith and hope in everlasting life,

To the loving mercy of our Father and assist him with our prayers.

In baptism he was made by adoption a child of God.

At the Lord’s table, Philip was sustained and fed.

May he now be welcomed at the table of God’s

Children in heaven and share in eternal life with all the saints.

We also turn to our Lord on our own behalf.

May we who now mourn his departure,

Be one day united with him.

May we all go forward together on that day to meet

Christ, when he, our life, appears in glory.

(The body is sprinkled with Holy Water to remind us that it was in Baptism that the Christian is promised eternal life and begins to share in the Risen Life of Christ. The body is then censed with incense as a token of respect for the dignity of human life and the greatness of man’s destiny.)

During this part of the liturgy the following will be played

We Praise Thee by Pavel Chesnokov         (Russian Sacred Choral Music)

Saints of God, come to his aid!

Haste to meet him, angels of the Lord.

Receive his soul and present his to God the Most High.

May Christ who called you take you to himself;

May angels lead you to the bosom of Abraham.

Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.

Into your hands, Father of mercies,

we commend our brother and priest Philip

in the sure and certain hope

that together with all who have died in Christ,

he will rise with him on the last day.

Listen, O God, to the prayers of your Church on behalf of the faithful departed, and grant to your servant Philip, whose funeral we have celebrated today, the inheritance promised to all your saints. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

The Celebrant gives the blessing and we reply:

Amen.

In peace let us take Philip to his place of rest
