Some of you will already be aware that, an opportunity has arisen for Contemplative Fire to hold a Working Party Retreat at Whaley Hall Retreat Centre. Whaley Hall Retreat Centre was the venue for the Community Weekend in 2019.
Whaley Hall is a very large, very old property with quite extensive grounds, but there are only 2 people, Fr. Jamie and David, who have full responsibility for running the retreats and for the maintenance and upkeep of both the house and grounds, which is a huge amount of work. In addition, during the Summer emergency of 2019 concerning the dam in Whaley Bridge, they provided round the clock meals, refreshments and accommodation for emergency crews and evacuated residents. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-49275929
During our previous stay, many of us felt we would like to do something practical to help Fr. Jamie and David with some of their workload, as it was clear they were tired and overstretched and so the idea was conceived of forming a working party and combining this with retreat elements.
Contemplative Fire practices will be woven around physical work; namely gardening or – for those not able to garden – helping in other ways e.g. prepare and serve meals to everyone. We will also need people to lead sessions e.g. silent times; reflection sessions.
This will be a new retreat venture for Contemplative Fire and it is hoped that some of you who do not normally attend retreats will decide to try it, alongside those who already regularly take part in Contemplative Fire retreats. Do feel free to invite your family or any friends that you think might enjoy this time together.
There will be full flexibility on how many days people would like to attend and for day visitors also.
In terms of cost – we will have free accommodation, but will need to provide and cook our own food – a kitty contribution would be helpful. Whaley Hall offers basic accommodation in rooms that can accommodate families, and children will be welcome.
In the morning and evening we will hold short reflective sessions, which will be open to all, but obviously everybody can choose what they would like to attend.
This is the first time we have undertaken this type of event, and we are still working through the details, but if you could complete and return the form below, when all the numbers are in we will draw up a plan of action for the kitchen.
